Welcome to Hughenden

Hughenden, set along the Flinders River in North West Queensland, is a quintessential outback town with a prehistoric twist. Known as part of Australia’s “Dinosaur Trail,” Hughenden is home to ancient marine fossils and the life-sized replica of Hughie, a famous Muttaburrasaurus, drawing dino enthusiasts from across the country.

The landscape surrounding the town shifts dramatically—from rugged basalt country and sweeping grazing plains to the striking Porcupine Gorge, often called Australia’s “Little Grand Canyon.” While small in size, Hughenden offers warm country hospitality, rich pioneering history, and a surprising sense of adventure. It’s a stop where travellers can step back in time, stand on ancient sea beds, explore dramatic natural wonders, and experience the true heart of Queensland’s outback.
