Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts

The Reef Trail

First Nations Experience

Umbrella is a leading independent platform for contemporary and experimental arts practice operating on Wulgurukaba and Bindal Country (Townsville, North Queensland).

We have a four-decade legacy of bringing art and audiences together. We amplify critical and creative voices, support communities, incubate creativity and collaboration, and advocate for new models and investment in the arts.

Immerse yourself in ancient songlines reimagined as modern art in the North Queensland First Nations exhibition gallery. Channel your inner artist and create prints and pottery at a creative workshop in the centre’s Maker Space.  Travelling with kids? Check out the Creative KIDS program and let their imaginations run wild as they experiment with materials and techniques.

Starting on the 31st of Jan 2025, stop by to see the Bonday Muggie exhibition which presents work by Girramay artist and artworker Nephi Denham as a contemporary exploration of his Culture. Based on Girramay Country / Cardwell, North Queensland, the artist first started work with Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre in 2009, learning from his elders. Since then, Denham has continued developing his arts practice, and shares his skills as the Workshop Assistant for the centre. Denham’s art practice predominantly spans ceramics and weaving. He often reinterprets the weaving style from his elders with new materials such as coloured wired and whipper snipper cable. This exhibition is presented in partnership with Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre.
