About

Born in Cali, Colombia, Carlos studied marine biology before taking up singing and relocating to Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Music Performance and a Master of Music (Opera Performance) from the University of Melbourne, where he was awarded the Keith G. Chapman Memorial Scholarship.

In Australia, Carlos has worked with Victorian Opera, The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria, Melbourne Lyric Opera, Opera Australia, Australian Ballet, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Short Black Opera, University of Queensland and Opera Queensland (OQ). He has also performed in Italy, Germany, and Colombia.

Roles have included the tenor solo in Verdi’s Requiem, Marco (The Gondoliers), Alexander (Il re pastore), Michael (Pecan Summer by Deborah Cheetham), Tony (Masterclass by Terrence McNally), Steuermann (Der fliegende Holländer), Edgardo and Normanno (Lucia di Lammermoor), Sir Bruno (I Puritani), Flavio (Norma), The Pied Piper (The Pied Piper by Richard Mills), Saint Chavez (Four Saints in Three Acts), Maese Pedro (Master Peter’s Puppet Show), Prince April (Respighi’s Sleeping Beauty), Witch (Hansel and Gretel), Prince Charming (Cendrillon), Arnoldo (Guillaume Tell), Elvino (La sonnambula), Tebaldo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) and Nadir (The Pearlfishers). Carlos received a Green Room Award for his performance of Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer.

Most recently for OQ, Carlos performed in The Sopranos in QPAC’s Concert Hall with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Home Grown Opera with Bleach* Festival on the Gold Coast, and featured in OQ’s Voices of Vic Park concert with Brisbane Festival and Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra.

Upcoming engagements for OQ include Malcolm in Verdi’s Macbeth at QPAC in March and the Festival of Outback Opera in May.
